Real wedding inspiration

A countryside backdrop set the scene for Margaret and Lee’s flower-filled, musical nuptials

Margaret, 30, a music teacher and accountant, married Lee, 48, a garage owner and manager, at the Sculpture Gallery at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire.

The atmosphere...

A vintage rose theme inspired our summer countryside wedding after I read a poem called La Rose Complète by Rainer Maria Rilke. We later visited the Royal National Rose Society Gardens in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and were both blown away by the beauty of the classic English bloom.

Our venue, the Sculpture Gallery at Woburn Abbey, was light, airy and steeped in history with a beautiful garden, which, most importantly, featured lots of roses! It helped to create an old-fashioned, romantic atmosphere where guests could appreciate the blush colours and floral theme.

The look...

My Claire Pettibone ‘Brigitte’ gown was made from silk and French lace, and covered with embroidered roses. I chose my Juliet cap veil for the silk organza roses which tied in perfectly with the theme, and I carried a bouquet full of gorgeous pale pink peonies and roses.

Lee’s buttonhole was a ‘Keira’ David Austin rose with ivory freesias and he wore a pale blue wool suit with a floral-print shirt and pink tie.

The details...

The tables were decorated with pink, lilac and ivory blooms, with scattered rose petals on each table. Our cake was embellished with sugar roses, hydrangeas and lace-effect icing which gave it a traditional English country garden feel.

The stationery had a vintage rose style, and I wrote the place settings in calligraphy, which my grandfather taught me when I was younger.

My favourite moment...

I loved being able to play the piano after the speeches were over; I surprised Lee by playing a piece I had composed for him. I also played the flute with my father accompanying, which was a special moment.

My tip for brides-to-be...

Your wedding day is the one day you can really express yourself as a couple. Take full advantage of this and go for what you really love, I found it so liberating.
